Variety is reporting that Brie Larson is in early talks to play Captain Marvel, one of the most popular and powerful female superheroes in the Marvel universe. Variety notes that Larson is currently Marvel's first choice, and that she is leaning toward playing the part.
Brie Larson has starred in number of indie movies and won the best actress Oscar for Room earlier this year. She also starred in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. And I loved her guest role in Community as Abed's girlfriend. Her next role is in the upcoming film Kong: Skull Island and she is currently filming The Glass Castle.
Though Larson is currently tad bit on the younger side to play Carol Danvers, she is a great actress and this casting choice bodes well for the character.
Captain Marvel won't be released until March 8, 2019, but the character is bound to make an appearance in another Marvel film prior to starring in her own film akin to Black Panther's role in Civil War. Fans can expect to see her in Avengers: Infinity War – Part 1 (Old title) or even a cameo in Thor: Ragnarok.
Carol Danvers is an air force pilot whose DNA fuses with an alien, creating Captain Marvel, a space cop with a variety of super powers including flight, super-strength, and the ability to project energy from her hands.
No director is currently attached to the movie. Meg LaFauve (Inside Out) and Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy) are writing the screenplay.
Emily Blunt, Katee Sackhoff, and Yvonne Strahovski were some of the names that used to get mentioned during fan casting, but I was hoping for Katheryn Winnick of Vikings to get the part. But I will be happy if Larson gets finalized for the role.
I am also looking forward to see how they adapt her awesome modern comic costume for the movie. And I hope they go with her distinct hairstyle, along with the add-on helmet. Artist Jamie McKelvie redesigned the costume in 2012. Check out the images below.
I hope Marvel makes the Captain Marvel hoodie / jacket a reality (including for men). Love the design.
