Disney Reportedly Working on Extensive Reshoots for ROGUE ONE

Page Six is reporting that Disney are not fully satisfied with the first cut of Rogue One and the movie will go through four weeks of expensive reshoots in July. We recently posted the new promo artwork for Rogue One here.

Though reshoots are common with big budget movies, four weeks of filming is still a lot. Rogue One which is geared towards a much old school audience is known to have a darker tone than the prior Star Wars films.

Here is more from Page Six (They also broke the news of Alden Ehrenreich being cast as Han Solo earlier this month).

“Gareth’s work on the first ‘Godzilla’ [which came out in 2014] shows he can handle a big studio blockbuster. But ‘Rogue One’ has fallen short of what J.J. Abrams did with ‘Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens.’ So Disney has ordered reshoots.”

Edwards is well-known as a risk-taking director, but has also been reported to prefer to keep studio influence at a minimum. The source added, “Disney won’t take a back seat, and is demanding changes, as the movie isn’t testing well.
The early cut screening not going well still wouldn't necessarily reflect the movie's quality, but Disney could end up making the movie more accessible to a wider audience. Deadline is also reporting that only the Disney suits and producers watched the initial cut of the film and there was no test screening for an audience. Apparently the first cut was lacking the edge that Force Awakens had and the story needs to jell.

I still feel the general moviegoers are bound to be confused about the timeline of Rogue One and many will continue to assume this to be a sequel to The Force Awakens. Disney wanting to retain the subtitle "A Star Wars Story" is not going to make the marketing any easier to distinguish it from Star Wars: Episode VIII. Some of the audience might expect The Force Awakens characters along with Luke to show up and could be disappointed to discover more unknown new characters.

A Disney source added, “The filmmaking team and the studio always anticipated additional shooting and second unit work to make the film the absolute best it can be, and the actors were aware there would be additional shooting. Coming off ‘The Force Awakens,’ there’s an incredibly high bar for this movie and we have a responsibility to the franchise and to the fans to deliver the best possible movie we can.
Though it will have nods to the OT characters and Darth Vader is known to make an appearance, Rogue One is the first of many Star Wars spin-off movies that still needs to stand on its own. So I am hoping the reshoots won't compromise on keeping the distinct tone of the film which has been hinted in the trailers.
